Milarepa Retreat Center

mila01In the northern part of New Zealand, close to the township of Warkworth, a very special project of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang is in the process of being developed, the Milarepa Retreat Center.

mila02 mila04In the year 2005 the Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang went on a Dharma Tour to the United States. While on his way, he stopped in New Zealand, due to an invitation of one of his students. During his stay in New Zealand, His Holiness and his students had the idea to find a land suitable to establish a Drikung Kagyu retreat center in New Zealand.

Two years later, disciples asked His Holiness to return and to give his opinion, if a stretch of land they had found, would be suited for this purpose. His Holiness, accompanied by students from Taiwan and Malaysia was scheduled to stay two days in New Zealand. After the first day of looking at some potential properties, His Holiness was not satisfied. He asked to look for other real estate offers. While driving around north of Auckland, they accidentally spotted a real estate advertisement offering an almost 50 hectar piece of land with forests and a brook. When they reached the location, the Drikung Kyabgön said that this was the right place. So immediately his disciples purchased this property.

mila03 During the past years this farmland was made accessible with a road being built and electricity cables laid into the ground. At present the Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang is staying in New Zealand to oversee the further building activity at the Milarepa Retreat Center. In March this year construction work for 15 meditation huts will start, including 4 huts for the traditional three-year retreat.

Recently, His Holiness signed an agreement between the International Dunhuang Project (IDP) at the British Library, and the Drikung Kagyu Institute (DKI), Dehra Dun. The purpose of this agreement is to make available transcriptions of all the ancient Tibetan Zen manuscripts from the Dunhuang Caves. At present, His Holiness is actively is working on this project as well as on the Hevajra Drubchen Sadhana of Marpa.

mila05Support of the Milarepa Retreat Center in form of donations would be very much appreciated. Donations should be forwarded to the Drikung Kagyu Vajra Charitable Trust. For further information and questions please contact:
